PCS is a Classical Christian school serving grades pre-K -12 in the Greater Bangor region. We help Christian families fulfill their responsibility to provide a biblically-based, Christ-centered education characterized by academic excellence. We cultivate students who grow up to love God, discern truth, and value beauty.

What Makes Penobscot Christian Different?

PENOBSCOT CHRISTIAN IS A PARENT SPONSOR SCHOOL

PCS is Parent Sponsored - this makes us different in three ways

  1. Responsibility - Parents understand that they hold the primary responsibility for educating their children. Deuteronomy 6 and Ephesians 6 emphasize this truth. However, not every parent has the skills or resources to teach their children all subjects. As the body of Christ, PCS staff serve in loco parentis (in place of the parent) to enable parents to fulfil their God given responsibility. This is distinct from other educational philosophies which view the government or community as holding the primary responsibility for educating children. If you're looking for a school where you don't have to be highly involved in your child's education, formation, and matriculation. then PCS is not for you.

  2. Community - PCS relies heavily on parental involvement to create a thriving extended community. By intentionally depending on parental volunteers rather than hired staff for many tasks, we not only keep costs low relative to other classical Christian schools, but we foster an environment in which relationships are built around shared work. This looks like every parent helping out and supporting the mission of the school with their gifts and talents, serving on the board or sub-committees, welcoming students at drop off, serving in the Parent Teacher Fellowship, coaching sports, and more. If you're looking for a school in which your only job is to drop off and pick up your child, PCS is not for you.

  3. Diversity - Bounded by our conservative, orthodox statement of faith, PCS is comprised of families from over two dozen local churches. This bounded theological diversity provides children with the perfect balance of shelter and exposure - shelter from destructive ideologies and exposure to different Christian traditions. It allows children to be formed in the othodox faith, learn and appreciate other denominational viewpoints and practices, and experience the unity of Christ's body lived out each day. If you're looking for a school that perfectly aligns with a particular denominational creed, PCS is not for you.

PENOBSCOT CHRISTIAN HAS CLOSED ENROLLMENT

What does “CLOSED ENROLLMENT” mean?

Students and families that attend our school also regularly attend a bible believing local church.  Families need to agree with our Statement of Faith and be in regular  attendance at a local Bible Believing Church.  Families need a Pastoral Reference each year they are enrolled at PCS, as a part of the application process.

STATEMENT OF FAITH

  1. Man’s chief purpose is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.

  2. The only infallible authority of faith and life is the inspired, infallible, inerrant Word of God, the Bible.

  3. There is one God existing in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

  4. The universe, including man, is the creation of God and is preserved and governed by His providence.

  5. Man was created good, but by sinning against God, fell into misery, condemnation, and death.

  6. In His sovereign grace and mercy, God provided redemption through the Lord Jesus Christ, who, being the eternal Son of God, became man, lived a life of perfect righteousness, and died on the cross that believers might be delivered from judgment, restored to fellowship with God, and called to lives of obedient service.

  7. God’s plan for this world, as revealed in the Bible, includes the personal return of Jesus Christ, the final judgement of the just and the unjust, the resurrection of the just to eternal life, the resurrection of the unjust to everlasting death.

  8. We believe and teach that sexual relations should take place only between a man and a woman who are married to each other and that fornication, adultery and homosexual acts are sinful in all circumstances. The only marriage relationship recognized by God is between one man and one woman.

CORE VIRTUES

  • I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

God has made me able to do everything I have to do.

  • I am a child of God. I am very valuable because God made me.

  • I will resolve to keep watch over my thoughts, my tongue and choose what’s right

even if it’s not what I want.

  • I ought to do my job because I will be obeying God,

my parents and everyone in authority over me.

PENOBSCOT  CHRISTIAN IS A CLASSICAL SCHOOL

What does “CLASSICAL SCHOOL” mean?

“Classical education depends on a three-part process of training the mind. The early years of school are spent in absorbing facts, systematically laying the foundations for advanced study. In the middle grades, students learn to think through arguments. In the high school years, they learn to express themselves. This classical pattern is called the trivium.” Susan Wise Bauer

  1. The first years of schooling are called the “grammar stage” This is the age when children actually find memorization fun. Creating the building blocks of a firm understanding of education, through memorizing facts in all subjects. This is done through songs, chants, poems, along with learning through living books, creates a confidence and curiosity in knowing.

  2. Middle-school students are less interested in finding out facts than asking “Why?” The second phase of the classical education, the “Logic Stage,”  is the time when the students become curious about why all the facts they have learned happened. This desire to understand cause and effect within all the subjects, creates a deeper understanding, and curiosity of the world around them.

  3. The final phase of a classical education, the “Rhetoric Stage,” builds on the first two. This is the time to focus on both writing and speaking with clarity and confidence. Students are learning how to apply their facts from Grammar School with the understanding from Logic School, to create persuasive arguments in both writing and speech. Students are also looking forward to what their goals would be, whether pursuing college, military, or the workforce, we offer opportunities to explore these options with hands-on experience.  PCS works with local colleges for our students to take courses from to prepare and earn them college credits. PCS also works with a local technical school where students can learn a trade to make them more effective in the workforce.

“A classical education is more than simply a pattern of learning, though. Classical education is language-focused; learning is accomplished through words, written and spoken, rather than through images (pictures, videos, and television).” Susan Wise Bauer
